The degree of PhD in the Department of Japanese Studies is normally completed by research only. Students are required to possess an approved MA and a high level of competency in the Japanese language. Applicants who do not satisfy this requirement may be accepted initially into MA candidature and may, with the approval of the faculty's Committee for Graduate Studies transfer to PhD candidature after a period of not less than one year.
