Communication studies

4 points * one 1-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial per week * Full-year subject * Caulfield

Objectives Semester one On successful completion of this subject the student should be able to prepare and deliver informative oral presentations; demonstrate interviewing skills to enable him/her to acquire a good brief from a client and apply effective self presentation in a job interview; become a more comprehensive, empathetic, critical listener; develop an understanding of the role of the self concept; understand psychological factors involved in advertising: rewards and perception, that are of use to the graphic designer; use knowledge of consumer behaviour to help select target audiences, talk the consumer language and determine what motivates them. Semester two Understand the symbolic nature of verbal and non-verbal communication, in the context of interpersonal, group and intercultural communication; develop a critical awareness of sociocultural and sociolinguistic factors in the communication process; grasp basic writing skills and understand the power of words and their creative use in copywriting; develop competencies to evaluate and analyse argument and use evidence to enhance the persuasiveness of a message; analyse how words and visuals complement and contrast with one another; understand the role of the graphic communicator and writer in the development of communication strategies; understand the nature of creative problem solving, and the appropriateness of logical and lateral thinking.

Synopsis Students examine the elements and processes of communication and models of communication: Students are given experiential opportunities to develop oral and listening skills, interviewing techniques, language and writing style, interpersonal, group and intercultual communication. skills. An introduction to copywriting, the psychology of advertising, and creative problem solving provide the basis for the development of ad concepts and creative rationales.

Assessment Assigned projects: 65% * Written test: 35%
