Students must be enrolled in course B4001, B5001, B5002, B6006, B6007, B6009 or B6012, or be granted permission by the Chief Examiner to undertake this unit.
Synopsis
This unit will involve a comprehensive examination of executive leadership in Australia and internationally. Students will study individual, group and organisational issues, specifically in terms of current and traditional leadership models and paradigms; gender, ethical, and strategic issues; and the relationships between leadership and performance, group dynamics, and organisational culture.
Outcomes
The learning goals associated with this unit are to:
- define the purposes and scope of leadership theories and research outcomes, and identify their applications to real-life situations
- describe and evaluate the principles and practices of management, their differences and similarities to leadership, and their relationship to leadership in an organisational setting
- evaluate the multifaceted nature of leadership in Australia and internationally, and enhance students' own leadership skills in the process
- evaluate the trends in and implications of leadership and management research in organisations and their impact on work environments
- critically analyse the development of leadership in relation to research outcomes and practical applications.

Workload requirements
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
