Prerequisites

Successful completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited four-year sequence in psychology.

Synopsis

This unit develops core skills in counselling and applying evidence-based interventions to clinical practice. Core skills are developed through guided rehearsal, feedback and practice. Students are introduced to mainstream theoretical approaches in current psychotherapy and the evidence base supporting these. Students are also introduced to a range of presenting issues, and develop expertise in sourcing and applying evidence-based interventions for working with these issues in clinical settings.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. develop foundational professional skills for therapeutic practice
  2. apply core counselling skills with a variety of clients and presenting issues
  3. demonstrate an understanding of main theoretical models and key factors influencing therapeutic outcomes, including evidence based to support these
  4. identify evidence-based therapeutic interventions and how these might be applied in clinical work
  5. communicate a deep knowledge of the evidence base and therapeutic interventions for one core presenting issue relevant to counselling practice.

Fieldwork

Supervised professional experience related activities are undertaken in this unit which contribute to the total placement hours required in EDF5517.

Assessment

Research report (4000 words, 50%)

Class presentation (2000 words equivalent, 30%)

Weekly quiz (2000 words equivalent, 20%)

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload equals 288 hours per semester comprising:

  1. Contact hours for on-campus students:
    • 2.5-hour lecture/workshop per week
    • 0.5 hour per week supervision of placement-related activity
  2. Additional requirements (all students):
    • independent study to make up the required minimum hours per week
