Synopsis

This unit focuses on the physical processes of land surface hydrology, covering evapotranspiration, precipitation, interception, infiltration and surface flows. The unit also covers the combination of these processes in surface hydrology models, including calibration and applications.

Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. compile time series data on precipitation and evapotranspiration.
  2. model water flow processes in the unsaturated zone.
  3. understand the process that control runoff and stream flow.
  4. develop a conceptual hydrological model.
  5. apply hydrological models to real-world problems.
  6. work both independently and collaboratively on complex surface water problems.

Assessment

NOTE: From 1 July 2019, the duration of all exams is changing to combine reading and writing time. The new exam duration for this unit is 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Continuous assessment: 40%

Examination (2 hours): 60%

Students are required to achieve at least 45% in the total continuous assessment component and at least 45% in the final examination component and an overall mark of 50% to achieve a pass grade in the unit. Students failing to achieve this requirement will be given a maximum of 45% in the unit.

Workload requirements

1 hour lecture, 2 hours practicals and 9 hours of private study per week.
