Synopsis

This unit focuses on the development of specialist practice skills and knowledge necessary to work in an Intensive Care Unit.

The core skills and expertise of an Intensive Care Nurse are covered including: Oxygen therapy, Non-Invasive Ventilation, Intubation/Extubation, Mechanical ventilation, Tracheostomy care, Haemodynamic monitoring and Advanced Life Support

Assessment takes place in the clinical environment as well as a written examination and a written assignment which aim to verify the students understanding of evidence based and reflective practice.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the unit the student should be able to:

  1. Perform a structured assessment and plan care for an ICU patient in single organ failure.
  2. Provide and evaluate care for patients requiring high flow oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation.
  3. Provide and evaluate care for patients requiring intubation, mechanical ventilation, respiratory weaning, tracheostomy and extubation.
  4. Assess basic haemodynamic monitoring data and critically evaluate management of patient instability. .
  5. Provide Advanced Life Support and safely transport ICU patients to other clinical areas
  6. Perform and reflect on clinical practice in accordance with the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses' practice standards.

Fieldwork

Students must be working as a Registered Nurse in an Intensive Care Unit for a minimum of 3 days/week

Assessment

  • End of semester written examination (2 hours) (hurdle) 35%
  • Written assignment (2500 words) 35%
  • Clinical assessments and summative appraisal (hurdle) 30%

Workload requirements

6 hours of contact hours and 6 hours of self- directed study per week
