Synopsis
The unit provides a foundation for the study and practice of employment and human resource management through exploring the complex range of factors which shape how employers and employees relate to each other across a range of developed and developing market economies. Topics include comparative analysis, international employment relations institutions and actors, and employment relations in Europe, the Americas and in Asian economies, including China and India.
Outcomes
The learning goals associated with this unit are to:
- develop knowledge and skills applicable to working in the various fields of management in both government and non-governmental organisations
- identify and explain the range of factors (economic, historical, political, national and international) which may influence national employment relations patterns
- apply comparative analysis to evaluate contemporary developments in employment relations at the international, national, industry and workplace levels
- identify and examine different perspectives and value systems in employment relations.

Within semester assessment: 40% + Examination: 60%
Workload requirements
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
