Synopsis
This unit will emphasise the study of social relations between racial and ethnic groups in selected societies. The unit will pay special attention to the place of ethnic and Aboriginal groups in Australia. The concepts of race, racism, ethnicity, prejudice, discrimination and multiculturalism will be analysed and discussed in detail.
Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
- Identify and describe the different theories and concepts through which sociologists and other social scientists seek to explain issues of race and ethnicity;
- Demonstrate a critical evaluation of the relationship between national identity and ethnic identity;
- Identify contemporary issues associated with multiculturalism including multicultural citizenship, community languages and maintenance of cultural diversity;
- Understand the complexities of the relationships between dominant culture and minority culture including Aboriginal-European contact.

Within semester assessment: 70% + Exam: 30%
Workload requirements
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
