Synopsis

The unit introduces students to texts from other cultures and/or to texts that thematise cross-cultural encounters. In this way, students will engage with literary works that introduce readers to other cultures' ways of life; raise issues specific to particular cultural contexts; use language in culturally-specific ways and/or take cross-cultural encounters as a thematic focus of the text.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the unit students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate advanced understanding of the development of literary texts across different professional, cultural, historical and/or linguistic contexts, by engaging with literary works from or about other cultures;
  2. produce high level critical and/or creative written practice, in or about literary genres such as fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction, by critically evaluating literary works from other cultural contexts;
  3. apply advanced critical reading in the context of the field of literary studies, by engaging with theoretical approaches such as postcolonial theory and world literature theory;
  4. evaluate critically a range of approaches to literary and critical analysis, emphasising those that are attuned to reading literatures of other cultures.

Workload requirements

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. A unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
