This specialisation focuses on ways to lead and develop communities of learners and their learning; in workplaces, communities and in local, regional, global and virtual spaces. It offers ideas and approaches to enable participation and learning, through formal and non-formal means, and expand and extend practice and skill development in communities. Students studying counselling at Monash enrol in a skills-based course that investigates evidence-based theories and frameworks related to counselling and psychotherapy. Students learn to relate various counselling approaches and strategies across developmental stages (childhood, adolescence, adulthood, old age) while developing a deeper understanding of themselves, their personal values and preferred styles of counselling. The ethical practice of counselling and skills to write case notes and make appropriate referrals are covered. Counselling prepares professionals to work in a wide variety of fields including careers counselling, education, child and family services, child protection services, child psychology, health policy, counselling, family counselling, health services management and rehabilitation counselling. Students are taught by academics with extensive experience working as professional counsellors and/or psychologists. In addition to their academic study, students undertake a minimum of 300 hours of clinical counselling experience.

Professional counselling studies provides knowledge and skills for professionals working in a range of education, community, industrial and service-related settings. The Professional counselling specialisation covers major approaches to counselling, provides training in counselling practice and research, and introduces the study of ethical and professional issues in undertaking counselling as a profession.

Leading school communities to rethink and reform how and what is taught and learnt, is the focus of this specialisation which is available in four streams: digital learning, literacy, mathematics and science. It is designed for current and future education leaders who are faced with complex decisions in relation to curriculum innovation. This specialisation engages with the key issues and debates relating to digital technology in education and the application of effective educational technology practices for learning. You will learn how to adapt digital technologies effectively in teaching and learning across school, tertiary, workplace and community settings. There is a special focus on online teaching and learning but instructional issues relating to emerging technologies and practices, such as social media, digital games, mobile devices, virtual worlds and augmented reality will also be explored.

This program provides doctoral (PhD) students with the opportunity to focus on developing knowledge and expertise in their chosen discipline, as well as developing professional skills that will support their career ambitions.

Each student's research will be supported by the development of a range of skills that will help them to become more efficient researchers, ultimately improving the quality of the research and developing generic/transferable skills of value to prospective employers.

This program is also applicable to students studying externally.

Program requirements

All research students will be required to undertake compulsory training in the following areas:

  • Monash Graduate Research Induction (online)
  • Research Integrity (online)
  • faculty induction, including occupational health and safety (where required).

Professional development component

Students must, in consultation with their supervisor(s), satisfactorily complete a minimum of 120 hours of graduate research professional development activities:

  • 80 hours (minimum) of general professional development from the Graduate Researcher Development module, delivered through the Monash Institute of Graduate Research (MIGR).
  • 40 hours (minimum) of discipline-specific professional development, from the Discipline Enhanced Development Module, delivered through the faculty.

Students will discuss with their supervisors which optional activities best suit their interests and area of study and complete any mandated activities. Students are required to update their supervisors on their progress toward achieving the required hours of professional development activities.

It is a requirement of the Discipline Enhanced Development module in this program that students complete the following mandatory activity:

  • Students whose basis of admission to the PhD course was a Bachelor of Education (Honours) or Master of Teaching from Monash, commenced in 2015 or later, complete a mandatory 40-hour (minimum) activity entitled 'Research project design'.

Students may be required to complete specific activities offered in the Graduate Researcher Development module offered through MIGR.

Attendance will be monitored to ensure hours are accurately recorded.

Students may also be directed or encouraged to attend and make presentations at various forums throughout their enrolment.

This specialisation will qualify you to teach children and adolescents aged from five to 18 years in primary and secondary schools from Foundation to Year 12 and enable you to work more broadly in community, recreational and sporting settings. You will qualify as a generalist primary school teacher, specialist health and physical education primary school teacher and a secondary school teacher with health and physical education as your specialist teaching areas. At the primary level, you will develop an understanding of how primary school aged children learn and how they can be effectively and creatively taught across all primary curriculum areas such as English and literacies, mathematics, arts education, humanities and social education, science, health and physical education, and studies of the environment and sustainability. This specialisation will qualify you to teach adolescents from 12 to 18 years of age in secondary schools from Year 7 to Year 12 as a specialist teacher of health and physical education, health and human development and a third subject area of your choice, such as outdoor education and environmental studies. It will also prepare you to work more broadly in community, recreational and sporting settings. You will develop an understanding of adolescent learning and the nature of secondary education including areas such as classroom teaching and practice in schools, curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation, and education and its relationship to society.
