Synopsis

On the basis that the young and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to such global trends some topics in this unit will be delivered jointly with students undertaking SWK3380. The unit will explore global issues relating to aged care, including, but not limited to, cross-cultural approaches to aging, implications of movement of people to urban areas, and the implications of the movement of people across borders for employment.

Outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Review contemporary debates in globalization and their implications for professional practice in the aged care context.
  2. Discuss critical global issues that affect practice in the aged care sector including, but not limited to, global poverty, climate change, the gendered construction of roles in society, and mass movement of people.
  3. Identify issues relating to older people including, but not limited to, cross-cultural approaches to aging, implications of movement of people to urban areas, and the implications of the movement of people across borders for employment.
  4. Develop skills in researching global issues about which there may be limited local knowledge and critically review how such issues may influence local practice.

Assessment

One hurdle assignment (500 words)
Two assignments (2,000 words each) (50% each)

Workload requirements

Students will attend up to three hours of direct teaching classes per week and are expected to complete nine hours of independent study each week.

Bachelor of Social Welfare students - SWK3340 and SWK3350.
Bachelor of Health Promotion students - SWK2120. Consult with the Bachelor of Health Promotion course coordinator and then contact the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Berwick campus to enrol.

Prohibitions

Students in the Bachelor of Social Welfare cannot complete SWK3320, SWK3330 and SWK3380.
