Synopsis

On the basis that the young and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to such global trends some topics in this unit will be delivered jointly with students undertaking SWK3390. The unit will explore global issues relating to child welfare, including, but not limited to, child labour, child sex trafficking, the role of children in armed conflict and international adoption.

Outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Critically review contemporary debates in globalization and their implications for professional practice in the child welfare context;
Discuss critical global issues that affect practice in the child welfare sector including, but not limited to, global poverty, climate change, the gendered construction of roles in society, and mass movement of people;
Identify issues relating to children including, but not limited to, child labour, child sex trafficking, international adoption, and the role of children in armed conflict; and
Develop skills in researching global issues about which there may be limited local knowledge and critically review how such issues may influence local practice.

Assessment

One hurdle assignment (500 words)
Two assignments (2,000 words each) (50% each)

Workload requirements

Students will attend up to three hours of direct teaching classes per week and are expected to complete nine hours of independent study each week.

Bachelor of Social Welfare students - SWK3320 and SWK3330.
Bachelor of Health Promotion students - SWK2120. Consult with Bachelor of Health Promotion course coordinator and then contact the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Berwick campus to enrol.

Prohibitions

Bachelor of Social Welfare students cannot complete SWK3340, SWK3350 and SWK3390.
