This specialisation focuses on ways to lead and develop communities of learners and their learning; in workplaces, communities and in local, regional, global and virtual spaces. It offers ideas and approaches to enable the participation and learning, through formal and non-formal means, and expand and extend practice and skill development in communities. Taking units within this specialisation will deepen the knowledge of those interested in leading and developing individuals and communities through workplace and vocational learning, regional education, global and intercultural education, through partnerships, community building and policy making.

Structure of the master's program

There are four tiers that make up the Master of Education program. Student learning is sequenced from broad to deep across the four tiers:

(1.) Orientation to education tier orients those who come into the program without previous qualifications in education or work experience in education-related work.

(2.) Key constructs in education tier introduces students to some key theoretical frames and ideas within them, across a broad theme. It shows their expression and engagement in research conducted on this theme.

(3.) Enhanced professional learning tier deepens students' knowledge of particular ideas, specialist areas and contexts.

(4.) Professional inquiry tier supports students to extend their scholarly work through their contribution to public intellectual debate or by developing new knowledge in an area of their interest.

Students choose two or three enhanced professional learning units from the specific selection listed below in order to satisfy the requirements of the learning communities and practice development specialisation:
