Synopsis

This unit has been designed to introduce basic aspects of soil and rock mechanics to people from a non-civil engineering background. It covers all the concepts of Geoengineering at an elementary level. The unit begins with soil and rock classification and then moves into three-phase relationships and to principles of flow through porous media. Soil strength parameters will be introduced along with relevant laboratory determination methods, namely direct shear test and triaxial test.

Outcomes

On completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Classify geomaterials and explain the basic processes of geoengineering;

  1. Evaluate stresses and strengths of geoengineering materials;

  1. Analyse one dimensional water flow through soil;

  1. Apply soil and rock mechanics knowledge to design geoengineering structures at an elementary level;

  1. Comprehend and communicate geoengineering information effectively through written reports.

Assessment

Practical assignments: 40%
Examination: 60%
Students must achieve a mark of at least 45% in each component (examination and continuous assessment) and an overall mark of 50% to achieve an overall pass for the unit.
