Synopsis

This unit will emphasise the study of social relations between racial and ethnic groups in selected societies. The unit will pay special attention to the place of ethnic and Aboriginal groups in Australia. The concepts of race, racism, ethnicity, prejudice, discrimination and multiculturalism will be analysed and discussed in detail.

Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

Identify and describe the different theories and concepts through which sociologists and other social scientists seek to explain issues of race and ethnicity;
Demonstrate a critical evaluation of the relationship between national identity and ethnic identity;
Identify contemporary issues associated with multiculturalism including multicultural citizenship, community languages and maintenance of cultural diversity;
Understand the complexities of the relationships between dominant culture and minority culture including Aboriginal-European contact.

In addition, students taking this unit at third year level will also be expected to:

demonstrate a more sophisticated understanding of the key concepts explored in this unit,
draw upon a much wider range of literature to analyse contemporary concerns with regards to race and ethnic relations.
