Synopsis

The aim of this unit is for students to build critical research skills via the development and completion of an independent research project written up as an 18,000 word dissertation. Students carry out their research and write the dissertation under the supervision of a member of academic staff.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to demonstrate:

the ability to plan, implement and complete an independent research project under the supervision of academic staff
comprehensive knowledge of the key questions and issues pertaining to their field of study
the ability to undertake critical analysis of the key issues and arguments pertaining to their dissertation topic
skills in the data collection methods relevant for their research question and field of study
advanced skills in communicating research findings.
