Notes Previously coded AAS3020 SynopsisThe unit focuses on theories of race and issues of ethnicity, prejudice and racism, with particular emphasis on the continuities and discontinuities of discourses on 'race' in Australia; language use in a multicultural context; the uses of opinion polls; the representation of Indigenous people in the media and other forms of popular culture; multiculturalism and Aborigines. The value of an interdisciplinary approach to these topics is highlighted. ObjectivesUpon completion of this unit students should have gained an understanding of the relationship between Australian Aborigines and social institutions and how theories of race and experiences of racism continue to impact upon Aborigines, and in addition engaged with issues of research and research methodologies in relation to racism and prejudice in contemporary Australia.
