Synopsis
This unit focuses on the deconstruction of mass media, medical and political texts by observing the discourse types that shape and form the discourse. Special emphasis is placed on the dynamic relation between the local organization of the discourse and the global socio-cultural, historical and political characteristics that permeate and help to reconstruct the Hispanic discourse.
Objectives
Upon completion students should be able to deconstruct institutional texts and understand how the discourse is modulated to achieve particular ends. On completion students should be able to analyse media and political discourses by using critical and discourse analysis frameworks.
Assessment
Two tests (equivalent to 500 words each): 30%
Essay (1500 words): 35%
Seminar paper (1000 words): 15%
Oral presentation (equivalent to 500 words): 10%
Bibliography (equivalent to 500 words): 10%

3 hours (1 x 1.5 hour lecture and 1 x 1.5 hour seminar) per week
