Synopsis
Digital vascular imaging - instrumentation, related methods and procedures for specific examinations of the blood vessels of the body. The methods and imaging techniques for vascular and non vascular interventional therapeutic procedures performed using these forms of digital imaging instruments. Basic and applied concepts relevant to digital imaging in medical imaging generally and vascular imaging specifically from an information technology and digital image processing perspective. Qualitative and quantitative image enhancement routines and analysis tools.
Objectives
On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the scientific principles, technological characteristics and relevant applications of digital imaging systems used in vascular and non vascular studies;
- describe the relevant protocols, positioning and methods employed in digital vascular procedures of the human body and those used in interventional therapeutic procedures;
- understand and describe the general applications of information technology in medical imaging and its relationship to digital based imaging systems;
- understand and use a range of basic digital image processing routines used in general and applied applications in digital vascular imaging in medicine;
- apply radiographic criteria to angiographic image appearances;
- describe and apply a range of basic digital image processing tools for both qualitative and quantitative imaging analysis; and
- participate in a clinical digital vascular procedure as an informed junior member of this team.
Assessment
One written examination (3 hours): 50%
Laboratory reports: 30%
SOLAR case based exercises: 20%

Only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging.
