Synopsis
This unit analyses rock music as a site of contested political and cultural space and fuses these issues with a new politics of identity. The unit interrogates how different subcultures associated around post-Cold War rock genres use music as a form of political communication to advance their political agendas and celebrate their lifestyles and histories.
Assessment
Essay (3000 words): 65%
Open book examination (1.5 hours - equivalent to 1500 words): 35%
Third year students' essays and projects will require higher degrees of originality and more sophisticated conceptual and analytical standards than second year students' assessments. They will be evaluated based on how well they demonstrate evidence of the aforementioned criteria.
