Synopsis

This unit provides students with the important skills and information necessary to manage a general practice effectively. It covers the following topics: managing and marketing a service, managing patients, managing staff, managing information, financial management and managing risk.

Objectives

By the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Explain and evaluate the key management concepts for a general practice
  2. Describe the key elements of service provision
  3. Indicate in broad terms the marketing of a service
  4. Describe the sequential steps in the handling of patient contacts in general practice
  5. Analyse the telephone and appointment system of the practice
  6. Describe the important aspects of handling difficult situations and complaints
  7. Outline the key elements and main uses of a health record
  8. Assess and understand the issues pertinent to information management in the practice.
  9. Evaluate the most useful conceptual frameworks for managing people
  10. Recognise the legal obligations of employers
  11. Describe the cycle of human resource management (and its associated skills) from recruitment and selection to termination or resignation
  12. Describe the main elements of an accounting system and financial reports, including the basic accounts and their linkages, payroll, billing and accounts payable
  13. Describe the most common legal structures utilised by general practices
  14. Outline the main elements of a contract of employment
  15. Describe the overall framework and understand the main areas of risk management
