Synopsis

Individual research under supervision. Each research unit will need individual approval and no research unit will be approved unless a suitably qualified member of staff is available with adequate time to supervise the research. Authority rests with the Convenor, Honours Program to approve as a research unit a topic chosen by the candidate and to appoint a supervisor. The research unit must be such as in the opinion of the Convenor, Honours Program merits the attribution of twelve points.

Objectives

The unit aims

1. to provide an opportunity for students to undertake a considered and in-depth analysis of legal issues in a particular area and to formulate and articulate legal and policy issues;
2. to develop skills of critical analysis and original thought;
3. to encourage the interchange of knowledge and ideas between students and teachers in order to achieve a high quality of legal scholarship;
4. to develop students' competency in legal research skills and
5. to enhance students' organisational, presentational and writing skills. Students who successfully complete LAW5207 should in general
6. have acquired a detailed knowledge and expertise in the area of the topic which is the subject of the thesis;
7. have their capacity for critical analysis and original thought enhanced;
8. have an enhanced competency in legal research skills;
9. have the ability to research, organise and present legal and policy issues in a succinct and scholarly manner and
10. have completed a piece of legal research of publishable quality.

Thesis (12,000-15,000 words): 100%

LAW1100 OR LAW1101 and LAW1102 or LAW1104
