Synopsis

Over the last one hundred years, Jewish writers throughout the world have composed a remarkable array of works that deal with the modern experience. This unit will analyse modern Jewish novels, short stories, poems, and plays and will consider how writers understood modernism and their own identities as writers.

Objectives

Students completing this unit will:

  1. Develop an appreciation of the range of Jewish writers and the intersection of the Jewish and modern in their writing
  2. Understand how writers deal with issues of Jewish identity through literature
  3. Consider the significance of language in shaping literature
  4. In addition, third year students will be expected to develop their own research essay topic in relation to Jewish literature.

Essay 2000 words 40%
Tutorial presentation 500 words 20%
Class preparation and participation 1000 words 10%
Exam 1000 words 30%

Contact hours

Two 1-hour lectures per week and one 1-hour tutorial per fortnight
