Synopsis

This unit is an introduction to the linguistic study of Japanese and deals with a number of topics from different areas of language (writing system, sound system, word formation, particles, and other topics).

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Display a basic understanding of the major fields of Japanese linguistics and terminology used within it.

  1. Display a critical understanding of issues in Japanese linguistics.

  1. Undertake an analysis of their own written and spoken language.

  1. Utilize various inquiry techniques.

  1. Write an academic essay on a linguistics topic.

Assessment

Written work: 60%
Exam: 40%

Contact hours

2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week

Co-requisites

Japanese 3/4 sequence or equivalent
