Synopsis
As for GES2010
Objectives
Upon satisfactory completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- describe and understand the current major global environmental issues.
- understand and discuss the cross-scale and cross disciplinary nature of global environmental change
- show familiarity with global institutions, tools and mechanisms used to manage global environmental change
- critically review an international environmental convention or protocol.
- explore the nature of conflicts between environmental, political, social and economic interests associated with the development and implementation of global environmental management instruments
- Students taking this unit at a third year level will be expected to demonstrate a greater level of understanding of theoretical and interpretive issues.
Assessment
Critical analysis of an international environmental mechanism or convention (900 words); 20%;
Major Essay (900 words); 20%;
Oral preseantation (15 minutes): 10%;
Class Participation 10%;
Examination 2 hours (2000 words): 40%
Contact hours
One 2 hour lecture and a 1 hour tutorial per week. One full day trip.
