FRN3805 - Translation: Theory and practice

Synopsis

This unit aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop their skills in translating from French into English. It is focused on literary translation. Students will work individually and collectively on a variety of texts and will engage with issues involved in the translation process, including the analysis of style.

Objectives

On completion of this unit students will have:

  1. developed skills in translating (mainly literary texts) from French into English;
  2. gained a knowledge of issues involved in the translation process (e.g. fidelity/equivalence, the importance of capturing style, voice and register);
  3. enhanced their ability to analyse texts;
  4. acquired an understanding of issues of comparative stylistics;
  5. acquired a more developed sense of the richness of language and the importance of its precise and adroit use.

Assessment

Long translation (1750 words): 30%; Translation workshop (500 words): 20%; Group translation (250 words): 10%; Commentaire de texte (1000 words): 20%; Reading report (1000 words): 20%;

Contact hours

One 2-hour class and one 1-hour class per week

Prerequisites

Normally FRN2080.
Students who have successfully completed FRN1080 may seek the coordinator's permission to take the unit.
Students who have gained a D or HD in FRN2060 and who wish to take the unit should consult with the coordinator.
