Undergraduate Faculty of Arts
Leader(s): Patrick Durel
Offered
Clayton First semester 2009 (Day)
Synopsis
This unit builds on the skills acquired in French Studies 7 and 8. Homework prepared under guidance and class tutorials will help students to refine their written and oral proficiency in the areas of exposition and argumentation. Analytical work on selected documents will allow students to develop a critical awareness of some of the main socio-cultural issues in the French-speaking world. Level 9 and 10 constitute an excellent preparation for the DALF exam (B2 and C1 units).
In the Specialized Culture component (French Culture & Everyday Life), students will develop an understanding of how, in the French context, everyday life reflects and embodies cultural and social change.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this unit, students should be able to demonstrate their mastery of advanced analytical, expository and argumentative skills in the context of essay writing and written and oral compte rendu activities, as well as in relation to the Specialized Culture component, to have:
- developed a critical awareness of the nature of "cultural studies" and of the artificiality of the boundaries between disciplines;
- acquired a greater critical knowledge and understanding of modern French society, its values and their evolution;
- developed research skills.
