Synopsis

Processes and practices of globalisation and their implications for education. Theories of globalisation and internationalisation, multilateral organisations and structures, cultural and social identities, political and economic processes. Practices and future of international education, national educational systems and globalisation.

Objectives

Upon the successful completion of this unit, students should be able to discuss education in an international and historical context, particularly the relationship between education and national development, the role of educational multilateralism and contemporary challenges to these paradigms; assess some of the current theories of globalisation and explore their utility in explaining the development of the policies and practices of international education; critically assess some of the issues surrounding competing definitions of internationalisation as they relate variously to curriculum, pedagogy and the organisation of education; analyse Australian higher education policy through an understanding of its historical context, globalisation, and related educational issues of curriculum, pedagogy, and the administration of education and educational institutions.

Assessment

Major essay (5500 words): 60%;
Folio (2500 words): 40%.
