Synopsis

The fostering of numeracy understandings in children will be developed through a focus on the teaching of problem solving and further content development (including chance and data) as students explore a range of classroom teaching and planning models and assessment strategies. Aspects of language and literacy learning and teaching including planning, teaching strategies, monitoring techniques and evaluation, and ways of integrating these aspects across the various modes of language and literacy will be explored

Objectives

On completion of this unit students should:

  • be confident in planning for and engaging in, a range of experiences to foster children's language and literacy capabilities and mathematics learning within different socio-cultural contexts;
  • appreciate the need for and be able to engage in inclusive practices that respect the rights of all children (e.g. Culturally and Linguistically Diverse children, Indigenous children, 'at risk' children);
  • be able to identify the role of literacy and numeracy in other curriculum areas and contexts;
  • be confident to use a range of teaching and learning strategies;
  • be able to use a variety of assessment techniques;
  • be able to identify key aspects in children's development of concepts and skills;
  • be able to identify the roles played by literacy and numeracy in contextualising multiple literacies in the classroom and in society;
  • be increasingly reflective of their own practice in literacy and numeracy teaching;
  • be able to adopt a critical approach to the literacy and numeracy in relation to the primary curriculum.

Assessment

Assignment 1: Planning, implementing and evaluating an intervention focusing on an identified group of diverse learners. (2000 words) 50%
Assignment 2: Justification and development of a contextualised unit of work. (2000 words) 50%
