Synopsis

This unit introduces the student to both project management and resource management in organisational settings. The unit will focus on a broad range of aspects of resource management but will pay particular attention to human capital investment examining the theories and practices of recruitment, role objectives, the work environment, conflict resolution, performance review, and employee learning and development. The unit will further explore the organisational tensions between delivery of product to market, sustainable resource management and the growing of human capital, examining the implications of triple bottom line reporting for viable long-term financial success of an organisation.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students should:

1 have an understanding of the concepts of resource management, both human and non-human;

2 be able to demonstrate their philosophy of resource management taking into account triple bottom line reporting;

3 be able to demonstrate their approach to both human and non-human resource management linking their understanding to the previous units of work;

4 be able to show evidence of their developing understanding of the importance of human resource learning and development in their organization

5 have an understanding of the nature and origins of project management, and its application in contemporary contexts;

6 acquired an understanding of the main principles, strategies, tools and processes for planning, implementing, and controlling projects; and

7 developed the basic practical skills necessary for planning and managing projects.

Assessment

Assignment 1: Class workshop activities and presentations (4000 word equivalence): 50%
Assignment 2: A Project Report (2,000 word equivalence): 25%
Assignment 3: An essay on Learning and HR Development (2,000 words): 25%
