Synopsis

Unit introduces the field of professional development and leadership at work, examining societal trends that have drawn attention to the importance and value of ongoing professional learning and theories of Leadership in relation to career development. It introduces the core body of theories and practices traditionally associated with needs and requirements of adult learning, and Leadership. Concepts, principles and styles of leadership, high performance and career development of adult learners will be explored. Professional development will be theorised with reference to changing responsibilities and values and their relationship to organisational leadership and personal career development

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of the broad traditions and philosophical approaches in ongoing professional development;

  1. situate key terms and theories utilized in professional development;

  1. develop insight into career development goals and the main organisational drivers associated with ongoing adult learning at work; and,

  1. gain confidence and ability in using literature and theory to reflect on professional practice.

  1. have developed knowledge and understanding of the concepts of leadership, the theories and practice of leadership.

  1. be able to apply these theoretical concepts and demonstrate skills by having developed their own philosophy of leadership;

  1. be able to show the ability to lead a range of different activities utilising various styles as appropriate in selected work situations with strong links to career development.

Assessment

A set negotiated workshop presentation activities (including a poster presentation (1,500 word equivalent), based on the workplace issues of the participants (5,000 word equivalent)
A Reading Report (1,000 word equivalent)
One essay of 2,000 words
