Synopsis
This unit will introduce students to three aspects of women's work in the theatre - writing, acting and directing. It will consider some major theatre works written or created by women, such as Aphra Behn, Caryl Churchill, Sarah Bernhardt, Marilyn Monroe, Maria Irene Fornes, Jenny Kemp, Anne Bogart, Ariane Mnouchkine. A special focus will be given to the ways in which feminism has impacted on the theatre in critical and creative ways. Practical work will be encouraged to demonstrate the significance of women's artistic contribution to contemporary theatre.
Assessment
Class paper (1350 words): 30%
Creative project (1350 word equivalent): 30%
Essay (1800 words): 40%
Third-year students will be required to show a greater understanding of feminist theory and its relationship to the analysis of women and theatre
