Description

This degree is aimed at students with musical abilities who are also interested in gaining a knowledge of the business sector. Students undertake core studies across the major commerce disciplines, as well as a major sequence in one of these areas. They also undertake a music performance major and either musicology or music as their second major, or both.

Objectives

The commerce component of this double degree provides a professional education in a range of commerce and business disciplines with a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills (refer also to the Bachelor of Commerce objectives at http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/courses/0179.html). The music component contains both theoretical and practical modules that prepare graduates for a range of roles within the music industry.

Structure

Students complete 96 points in the Bachelor of Music component and -96 points in the Bachelor of Commerce component.

Areas of study

Arts

Students complete the prescribed sequence in music from the Faculty of Arts.

Commerce

Students complete a major specialisation in one of the following areas taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics:

  • accounting
  • Asian development and transition
  • business modelling
  • business law and taxation
  • competition, regulation and public policy
  • econometrics and business statistics
  • economics
  • finance
  • human resource management
  • information, strategy and decision making
  • international commerce
  • labour and employment
  • management
  • marketing
  • sustainability.

All units taken as part of the major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Requirements

The degree requirements are:

Music component

(a.) students must complete 16 units (96 points) from the School of Music as follows:

(i.) core music units (84 points) :

  • MUS1100 Exploring music I

  • MUS2110 Analytical and compositional techniques I
  • MUS2120 Analytical and compositional techniques II

  • MUS3390 Music aesthetics, criticism, sociology and psychology
  • MUS3580 Contemporary music
  • MUS3610 Professional practice 3

  • MUS3980 Chief practical study V
  • MUS3990 Chief practical study VI

(ii.) plus two (12 points) from the following list:

  • MUS3200 Neo-traditional musics of the world
  • MUS3310 Contemporary compositional techniques
  • MUS3320 Jazz history
  • MUS3330 Music of north and south India
  • MUS3490 Indonesian gamelan: special studies
  • MUS3660 Music composition and technology workshop II
  • MUS3880 Music of China, Japan and Korea
  • MUS3910 Music of Sub-Saharan Africa

Commerce component

(a.) Students must complete 16 units (96 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:

(i.) six compulsory common core units (36 points):

  • AFC1000 Principles of accounting and finance
  • BTC1110 Business law
  • ECC1000 Principles of microeconomics
  • ETC1000 Business and economic statistics
  • MGC1010 Introduction to management
  • MKC1200 Principles of marketing

(ii.) at least two units (12 points) from the following list:

  • AFC1030 Introduction to financial accounting, or AFC2140 Corporate finance
  • ECC1100 Principles of macroeconomics
  • ETC1010 Data modelling and computing
  • MGC1020 Organisations: contexts and strategies

First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.

(iii.) a major of eight units (48 points):*

  • the major must come from the approved list of majors**
  • at least two units (12 points) must be completed at each of second and third-year levels

* Depending on the major chosen, one of the units in the major may have already been studied as part of the group of common core units - where this is the case, students will complete an additional unit as detailed in (iv.) above.

(iv.) additional units from the faculty in the Bachelor of Commerce at the Clayton campus to reach the required minimum of 16 units.

Additional degree requirements:

  • a maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points)
  • a minimum of four third-year-level units (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.
  • in addition to specific unit prerequisites, second -year level units require the successful completion of three first-year level units and third-year level units require the successful completion of two second-year level units.

Professional recognition

Students who wish to obtain professional recognition should refer to 'Professional recognition' under 'Faculty information' in the Faculty of Business and Economics section of this Handbook.

Alternative exit(s)

Students may graduate with the Bachelor of Music at the end of three years of study by transfering into the single Bachelor of Music degree (0821), provided they have met the requirements of the Bachelor of Music. Students may exit from the double degree program and graduate with the Bachelor of Commerce provided they have met the requirements of the Bachelor of Commerce.
