Course description

This double degree course allows students to qualify with both the Bachelor of Bachelor of Biomedical Science and Bachelor of Economics degrees.

This double degree provides a professional education in the disciplines of biomedical science and economics, with a strong emphasis in developing skills as health economists in the health services industry.

Course structure

Areas of study

Students must complete a major specialisation in economics. All units taken as part of the major specialisation are limited to units taught by the department of Economics on the Clayton campus.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics. Students must also complete the prescribed units from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

Course requirements

The degree requirements are:

(a) students must complete 16 units (96 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:

(i) completion of six compulsory common core units (36 points):

(ii) completion of five further compulsory units (30 points):

  • ECC1100 Principles of macroeconomics
  • ECC2000 Intermediate microeconomics
  • ECC2010 Intermediate macroeconomics
  • ECC2700 Economic issues in health and health care
  • ETC1010 Data modelling and computing

First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.

(iii) three third-year-level units (18 points) from the Department of Economics to complete a major specialisation in economics.

(iv) two further units (12 points) drawn from those offered at second year or third year from the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton).

(v) a minimum of four third-year-level units (24 points).

(vi) a maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points).

(b) students must complete 16 units (96 points) from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences as follows:

(i) year 1 – four compulsory units (24 points) as follows:

(ii) Year 2 – four compulsory units (24 points) as follows:

(iii) Year 3 – four compulsory units (24 points) as follows:

(iv) Year 4 – the compulsory units

  • BMS3021 Molecular medicine and biotechnology and
  • BMS3042 Biomedical basis of disease 2

and two third-year units from biomedical science, which may include BMS3011 Biomedical basis of disease 1 and/or BMS3032 Health policy and management

(c) students must also complete the following double-degree regulations:

(i) a maximum of 32 units (192 points) over a maximum of 10 years of study.
