Course description

This double-award program is vocationally oriented and aims to equip graduates for employment in a wide range of occupations in industry and commerce, small business, professional accounting, insurance, banking and finance, teaching and in government and semi-government enterprises.

The course is designed to provide maximum flexibility and to allow depth and breadth in the study of the major business and commerce discipline areas. Its structure provides the capacity to tailor applications and focus in different contexts and different environments while ensuring knowledge of the theory, principles and core elements in the relevant discipline areas.

Course structure

Areas of study

Students must complete a major in one of the following disciplines taught by the faculty: accounting, business law (by off-campus learning only), economics, e-business, human resource management, international business (by off-campus learning only), management and marketing. All units taken as part of the major are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the campus delivering this program.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Gippsland campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics. These other studies can form a professional specialisation in professional accounting.

Course requirements

Students will receive the following eight units (48 points) of advanced standing on the basis of successfully completing the TAFE Advanced Diploma of Business (Accounting):

AFW1001 Introductory accounting A*
AFW1002 Introductory accounting B
BTW1200 Business law*
Three unspecified exemptions at first year
Two unspecified exemptions at second year.

This course requires students to undertake a mix of Bachelor of Business and Commerce units and Advance Diploma of Business (Accounting) units.

Year one: 25 per cent university and 75 per cent TAFE
Year two: 25 per cent university and 75 per cent TAFE
Year three: 65 per cent university and 35 per cent TAFE
Year four: 100 per cent university and 0 per cent TAFE

The degree requirements are:

(a) completion of six compulsory units (36 points):

AFW1001 Introductory accounting A
BTW1200 Business law
ECW1101 Introductory microeconomics
ETW1102 Business statistics
MGW1010 Managing people and organisations
MKW1120 Marketing theory and practice

(b) a major of at least eight units (48 points) in a discipline from the faculty with at least two units (12 points) at each of second and third-year levels.

(c) completion of the Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE requirements for the Advanced Diploma of Business (Accounting) which provides eight units of advanced standing (48 points).

(d) a minimum of six third-year-level units (36 points), of which at least four (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.

(e) a maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points)

(f) an option to include a maximum of six units (36 points) in disciplines taught by other faculties or from units offered on campuses other than the campus delivering this program.

(g) at least four non-compulsory units (24 points) must be outside the main field of study.
