Graduate Diploma in Emergency Health (MICA Paramedic)

Course description

This industry-funded course, offered by the Department of Community Emergency Health and Paramedic Practice, is designed for qualified Victorian ambulance paramedics currently employed by an ambulance service who have a minimum of two years clinical experience and who have undergone joint selection with Monash University and either Metropolitan Ambulance Service (MAS) or Rural Ambulance Victoria (RAV).

MICA studies cover the theoretical foundations of paramedic practice; paramedic management of emergency cardiac conditions; paramedic management of emergency trauma and environmental conditions; paramedic management of emergency medical conditions and abnormal behaviour; paramedic management of paediatric and obstetric patients; and paramedic practice in an integrated emergency medical system. Students also undertake a paramedic clinical practicum.

Course objectives

On completion of this course, graduates will be able to: 1. explore an additional area of interest that is related to the field of community based emergency health to further develop the ability of the graduate to prepare for an advanced clinical practitioner role, through the completion of elective units of study; 2. identify the possible future trends in the delivery of pre-hospital services and the impact on the role of the professional ambulance paramedic; 3. discuss the influences of a changing health care environment and population on the role of the ambulance paramedic; 4. relate the contemporary issues and influences of emergency medical service systems to the role of the ambulance paramedic; 5. review his/her own clinical experience and arrange suitable learning experiences to maintain learning needs as a result of the varying clinical experience in the field; 6. critically review ambulance paramedic practice in light of current evidence; and 7. demonstrate the attributes required of an interactional professional in community based emergency health.

Course structure

The course is comprised of seven core units.

  • PAR4301 Theoretical foundations of MICA paramedic practice
  • PAR4302 MICA paramedic management of emergency cardiac conditions
  • PAR4303 MICA paramedic management of emergency trauma and environmental conditions
  • PAR4304 MICA paramedic management of emergency medical conditions and abnormal conditions
  • PAR4305 MICA paramedic management of paediatric and obstetric patients
  • PAR4306 MICA paramedic practice in an integrated emergency medical system
  • PAR4307 MICA paramedic clinical practicum
  • MEH4308 Paramedic clinical practicum*

    * This unit is only available to those paramedics who have received credit for the graduate diploma.

Assessment

Assessment will be a mixture of written assignments, oral presentations and practical skills.
