Course description

The principal aim of the course is to enable currently practising engineers and scientists to upgrade their professional qualifications in response to rapid changes in biomedical and associated technology. It is also intended to permit recent graduates, usually from other universities, to enhance their first qualification with studies in biomedical engineering to improve their prospects in this area of sustained employment growth.

The course will permit mature students to select units which suit their personal and professional needs as they develop from time to time and in so doing to accumulate credit towards awards on a flexible timetable. Single-unit enrolment is available.

The course provides a mix of units permitting students to develop an understanding of the interaction of the various layers of modern biomedical systems. Most units in the course use case studies and exercises to build understanding of the concepts and theoretical principles. The project or minor thesis will draw upon a number of subjects to gain understanding of biomedical systems as a whole. In particular, they will develop an understanding of specification, selection, performance, commissioning and operation of biomedical systems.

Articulation and credit

Credit is available to candidates who transfer from the postgraduate diploma to the masters without graduating at diploma level. Articulation is subject to prior approval upon satisfactory academic performance.

Course structure

This program course normally consists of:

a.) 48 points of coursework units only, however with the approval of the course director, students may undertake either:

b.) 36 points of coursework units and a 12 point biomedical engineering project, or

c.) 24 points of coursework units and a 24 point biomedical engineering thesis which will be assessed by two internal examiners (this option is intended for candidates intending to proceed to doctoral studies).

Depending on which of the above options a student undertakes, they must also complete one or both (for a total of 6 or 12 points) of the following:

  • PHY2011 Neuroscience of sensation, brain and movement or (BMS2011 Structure of the human body) and/or
  • PHY2021 Body systems physiology or (BMS2031 Body systems).

In the case of those taking options 1.) or 2.) up to 12 points may be drawn from any postgraduate program of the university, with prior approval of the course director.

  • ECE5081 Medical instrumentation
  • ECE5084 Biomechanics of human musculo-skeletal systems
  • ECE5086 Medical imaging technology
  • ECE5087 Medical technology innovation
  • ECE5094 Project A
  • ECE5095 Project B
  • MTE5596 Biomaterials

* Note that not all units will be available in any given year
