Course description

In line with the objective of broadening the educational experience for an MBA student and to provide specialist knowledge and skills, the double degree with the Master of Applied Finance will:

  • provide a rigorous and theoretical grounding in the discipline of finance and in its application in business decision making
  • develop an extended knowledge in the chosen area of specialisation
  • develop analytical skills which will assist in problem solving
  • develop skills in communications and interpersonal behaviour, allowing students to work effectively both in a team and independently
  • provide a course of direct relevance to the finance industry which fulfils the educational requirements for membership of the Treasury Association and the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance.

Credit for prior studies

Candidates should consult the MBA Programs office regarding the credit criteria for the MBA.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete 10 core units (60 points):

(b) Students must complete eight finance units (48 points) as follows:

(i) completion of two units (12 points) from the following list:

  • AFF9150 Options, futures and risk management
  • AFF9250 Financial management theory
  • AFF9260 Australian capital markets
  • AFF9350 Portfolio management and theory

(ii) completion of three compulsory units (18 points):

  • AFF5230 Financial markets and long-term funding
  • AFF5250 Corporate treasury management
  • AFF5270 Funds management

(iii) completion of three units (18 points) from the following list:

  • AFF5050 Advanced international banking
  • AFF5130 Financial statement analysis and business valuation
  • AFF5140 International finance
  • AFF5220 Finance and banking relations
  • AFF5251 Asian capital markets
  • AFF5260 Money market dealing
  • AFF5271 International investment management
  • AFF5290 Dealing in derivative products
  • AFF5361 Mergers, acquisitions and financial restructuring
  • AFX5860 International studies in banking and finance

(c) Students must complete any two graduate level units (12 points) offered by any department in the Faculty of Business and Economics.

It is recommended that students consult with the course director to ensure their elective units form a coherent study program.

Students would normally complete the 10 MBA core units before undertaking the Master of Applied Finance units.
