Course description

This program is designed for highly motivated students who wish to develop advanced competence in Japanese and English interpreting and translation. This course is suitable for both native and non-native speakers of Japanese.

Graduates should be able to operate as consecutive interpreters and translators at a high level of generalist professional competence. Graduates should also gain knowledge and understanding of the professional aspects of interpreting and translation and an advanced knowledge of theoretical concerns relevant to studies of interpreting and translation.

Minimum pass grade

To graduate with the Masters, students must gain a credit (60 C) or above in core units and a minimum credit average overall.

Course structure

Students complete 72 points, including five core units totalling 48 points and 24 points of electives chosen from the following list:*

    * All units are worth 12 points unless otherwise stated.

  • TRN4040 Translation 1: Discourse analysis
  • JIT4622 Interpreting B (6 points)
  • JIT4621 Interpreting current events in Japanese and English B (6 points)
  • JIT4843/5843 Advanced theory and practice of translation
  • JIT4731/5731 Theory and practice of Japanese interpreting

Elective units

  • JIT5842 Advanced Japanese interpreting
  • JIT5940 Projects in Japanese interpreting and translation
  • TRN5060 Theoretical issues in translation studies (6 points)
  • TRN5080 Research project in translation/interpreting studies
  • TRN5090 Dissertation in translation/interpreting studies (24 points)

Exit points

After successful completion of 24 points, students may apply to exit the program with a Graduate Certificate of Arts, or after successful completion of 48 points with a Postgraduate Diploma in Japanese Interpreting and Translation.
