Parkville First semester 2006 (Day)
Synopsis: Antisepsis. Sterilisation. Contamination control. Anti-infective agents. Chemistry of anti-infective agents. Applied immunology. Pharmacy of anti-infective agents. Practical classes, workshops and tutorials related to the lecture topics.
Objectives: Students will develop an: - Understanding of the structure, chemistry, function and classification, and pharmacy of a range of antimicrobial and antiparasitic agents; the nature and uses of antiseptics, disinfectants and preservatives; the role of the immune system in hypersensitivity reactions, auto-immune disease, and the development of immunity, sterilisation methods and contamination control - Ability in the areas of preventing contamination of pharmaceutical products and promoting rational use of antimicrobial agents. - Appreciation of the need to have well developed strategies for controlling infectious diseases and preventing contamination of pharmaceutical products.
Assessment: Examination 80% (3 hours) Practical work including assignment: 20%.
Contact Hours: 39 lectures; 34 hours of practical classes and workshops; no tutorials Successful completion of this unit will require participants to allocate an average of 6 hours per week for 12 weeks (a total of 78 hours per study period).
Prerequisites: All 2nd year B. Pharm units.
