Synopsis: Properties of polymers and excipients. Properties of powders. Unit operations. Pharmaceutical calculations.Tablets. Capsules. Hard and soft gelatin capsules, microencapsulation. Physical instability of solid dose forms. Polymorphism. Microbial instability. Formulation strategies. Classification and properties of disperse systems. Electrical stability of dispersions. Steric stabilisation and formulation principles. Aerosol systems. Homogenous aerosols. Heterogenous aerosols, emulsion aerosols. Foams.
Objectives: Students will develop: - An understanding of the theoretical principles outlined in the syllabus in relation to design of solid, dispersion and aerosol doseforms, oral drug delivery, biopharmaceutics, and pharmacokinetics of intravenous and oral drug administrations. - An ability in applying their theoretical knowledge to the formulation of proprietary dosage forms discussed in this syllabus and an understanding of the manufacturing processes involved in the preparation of these dosage forms. - An appreciation of how to apply their theoretical knowledge to give advice on safe and effective usage and care of pharmaceutical products to patients and other health care professionals.

Assessment: 2.5 hour examination (100%)
Contact Hours: 24 hours of lectures, 9 three-hour practicals, 4 Web based learning modules of 3 hours duration and 4 one-hour tutorials. Successful completion of this unit will require participants to allocate an average of 6 hours per week for 12 weeks (a total of 78 hours per study period).
Prerequisites: All units of 1st year Bachelor of Pharmacy
