Synopsis: Alkenes, aromatics, halides, alcohols, phenols, carbonyls, carboxylic acids and derivatives. Amines, amino acids, sulfur compounds. Polymers. Organic chemistry of metabolism. Perspectives in medicinal chemistry.

Objectives: Students are expected to develop: 1. Understanding of the key concepts in chemical structure and bonding including functional groups, pharmaceutical spectroscopy, reactions of organic molecules and the basic principles of medicinal chemistry. 2. Abilities in the areas of techniques associated with medicinal chemistry. 3. An appreciation of the role of molecular shapes and electronic distributions as the basis for drug-receptor interactions.

Assessment: Examination ): 80% (3 hours) , Practical work and other tests: 20%

Contact Hours: 30 lectures, 10 tutorials and 15 hours practical work Successful completion of this unit will require participants to allocate an average of 6 hours per week for 12 weeks (a total of 72 hours per study period).
