Synopsis: Commencing with a basic introduction and exercises, this unit develops through a sequential program of theoretical lectures, tutorials and practice, to culminate in the complex integrations of the selected principles of design relevant to digital media. Students are introduced to the theories of perception, problem solving in design and practicalities of producing type, image, layout and colour for electronic environments. The skills and knowledge acquired, form a solid basis to support the major area of multimedia computing.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, student should be able to: 1.understand the fundamentals of the visual language of graphic design; 2.understand the application of design elements and principles within digital media; 3.understand typographic terminology; 4.produce type generated by computer; 5.work with text and image, creating a hierarchy; 6.create design structures, grids, layout and composition; 7.understand and apply selected colour theories to digital media; 8.understand the design process and the role of graphic design within digital media.

Assessment: Major projects: (85%) + Minor projects: (15%)

Contact Hours: 12 hours per week, including 1 lecture hour, 2 studio hours and 9 independent study hours

Prerequisites: admission to either MMM or MMMComput degree
