Synopsis: Community Based Corrections is an integral part of the correctional system with 3 times as many offenders being placed on community orders than those who are sent to prison. This unit will complement the existing unit on the Sociology of Prisons (SCY2181/3181) and give students who wish to specialise in the correctional field a detailed insight into the different forms of corrections in the community and the rationale behind these. Community corrections include probation and parole, diversion, pre-trial release, restitution, community service orders, work and education release, residential and home detention programs.

Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 50% + Oral Tutorial presentation (500 word equivalent): 10% + Exam (2 hours): 40%

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: SCY1100 and SCY1200 or equivalent
