Synopsis: The unit presents the history of Christian thinking about the relationship of the self-communication of God (Word) and ritual activity within world-views that conceive of the material as pregnant with the divine. It explores myth and metaphor as the foundational components of Christian public worship, and the history and significance of ritual in Christianity.
Assessment: Short essay (1000 words): 25% + Research Essay (2500 words): 50% + Examination (1 hour): 25%
Contact Hours: 3 hours per week
Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in History or Religion and Theology or permission.
