Synopsis: The unit aims to continue the study of anatomy and physiology by examining the respiratory system, the musculoskeletal system and sensory perception. In each body system normal functioning will be compared to a selected number of disease states. Students will be introduced to the discipline of microbiology by examining the basic biology of microorganisms and the role of the nurse in infection control.
Objectives: On completion of this unit, students should be able to: 1. demonstrate a knowledge of the biology of micro-organisms and relate this to methods of infection control; 2. discuss the characteristics of medically important micro-organisms; 3. show an understanding of when microbe-host interactions can lead to disease; 4. relate a knowledge of the sources and methods of transmission of micro-organisms to the methods used in infection control; 5. discuss the use of antimicrobial drugs in overcoming infection; 6. discuss the role of immunisation in the prevention of infectious disease; 7. use correct nomenclature and terminology to relate the general anatomy of the components of the musculoskeletal system to their functions; 8. identify the main anatomical features of the limbs, trunk, head and neck; 9. relate the general anatomy of the respiratory system to its function across the lifespan; 10. demonstrate awareness of the organisation of the nervous system; 11. demonstrate an understanding of simple nervous pathways such as reflex arcs; 12. relate the anatomy of general and special sense organs to their functions across the life span; 13. develop skills in the observation, presentation and critical evaluation of first hand data; and 14. apply theoretical concepts to clinical situations to develop a framework for scientific understanding of nursing practice.
Assessment: Laboratory work (2 class exercises): 10% + Regional anatomy test: 20% + Quizzes (2 on-line): 10% + Written examination (2 hours) : 60%
