Synopsis: This unit provides an introduction to translation techniques, terminology and issues and contextual knowledge required in the discipline of translation. Emphasis is put on those aspects of language that are most relevant to translating.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. Control complex sentence constructions demonstrating an in-depth knowledge of Korean grammar and vocabulary. 2. Comprehend and analyse most varieties and registers of language encountered in texts related to topical social issues. 3. Apply knowledge of both Korean and Western cultures.
Assessment: Translation assignment (2000 words): 50% + Final examination (2 hours): 30% + Class exercises: 20%
Contact Hours: 4 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures and 2 x 1 hour tutorials) fortnightly classes and 2 hours on-line discussion per week
