Adjunct Research Subject ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Undergraduate
(ARTS)

Leader: Peter Howard, Mia Treacey

Offered:
Clayton Second semester 2006 (Day)

Synopsis: Most level three units offered in the School of Historical Studies are 6 point units. This unit provides students taking an approved corequisite unit with an opportunity to investigate it at greater depth and to interrogate its epistemological assumptions and pursue any related theoretical issues in a more substantial way than within the 6 point framework. For each student, the substantive content of the unit will differ, depending upon the particular problem they select for investigation. However, all students completing the unit will undertake essentially the same tasks - tasks designed to equip them with the methodological skills appropriate to a major in the Humanities.

Objectives: Students who successfully complete this subject will be able to: 1. Formulate and complete a substantial research project. 2. Demonstrate independent research skills. 3. Place, in greater depth and breadth than is possible in the co-requisite subject, the relevant literature in its cultural, ideological and epistemological contexts by showing where it fits into the current state of knowledge. 4. Display their acquaintance with some of the ongoing debates in the relevant discipline (archaeology, history, Jewish civilization, theology).
