Synopsis: As for HSY2105

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will: 1. Have acquired a broad knowledge of twentieth-century Indian social and political history. 2. Be familiar with the concepts of state, nation and community in the South Asian context. 3. Be able to comment intelligently, with reference to published literature, on the roots and results of the partition violence of 1947 and on the causes of collective violence more generally. 4. Demonstrate skills in the areas of bibliography, textual analysis and written and verbal argument. 5. Be conversant with debates about historical events and historical memory. 6. Be capable of devising and executing independently and advanced research project.
