Synopsis: Component 1: Continuation of first semester; further development of speaking and writing skills in German. Component 2: The period after the end of World War 2 up to the present. This period of German culture is marked by the experience of German fascism as well as the ideological and cultural impact of the Cold War, the quest for a democratic national identity, the emergence of new social and intellectual movements. Objectives: Component 1: By the end of this semester, students should have acquired the knowledge and skills as outlined in the objectives for first semester. Component 2: After completion of this component, students should have a) gained an understanding of how intellectual life and cultural discourses in the 2nd half of the 20th century evolved under the specific post-war conditions in German-speaking societies, b) developed appreciation of the artistic and intellectual achievements during this process c) achieved the ability to recognise styles, genres, intellectual preoccupations in their socio-historical contexts, and d) improved their oral and writing skills to engage in informed discussion of German culture, using appropriate terminology and applying the range of language skills pertinent to component 1.

Assessment: Essay (1000 words): 20% + Class paper: 15% + Test (45 min.): 15% + Exam (1 hour): 20% + 4 homework exercises: 20% + Oral assessment: 10%

Contact Hours: 5 hours (3 x tutorials and 2 x seminars) per week

Prerequisites: GRN3050 or equivalent
